For those not familiar with the game, beer pong is a party game that involves tossing a ping pong ball into a cup filled with water or beer. Professionally, the game is played as a game of skill, with cups of water, although beer is certainly served. It has evolved from a college dorm phenomenon into a game of skill with a world championship, held in Las Vegas. The winning team of Sudbury Biggest Beer Pong Competition will be flown to Las Vegas to compete in the international “World Series of Beer Pong”, with a whopping $50,000 grand prize.
`”It might seem a little wild for a Northern Lights fundraiser,” says Max Merrifield, Executive Director of NLFB, “but we saw the cult following this game had at our Oktoberfest event and we figured ‘why not?’. It’s fun, it’s unique, and we think it’s going to be a big hit!”
The competition is to be held at Sudbury Events Centre (19 Regent St.), and also includes a rockin’ DJ dance party for spectators, team supporters and party animals. Other than qualifying for the international competition, organizers are promising a selection of prizes for other teams, including prizes for best team costume, oldest team, and many more.
“Some might not realize how insanely popular this beer pong thing has become,” says event organizer Mark Varrin, “we’ve already heard about teams coming in from other cities to compete, so we are challenging Sudburians to bring their ‘A’ game!” The Sudbury event is sanctioned by Bpong.com – the international authority on the game and presenters of the World Series championship.
In order to register for the event, teams must sign up in advance at www.sudburysbest.com, or in person at the NLFB Office (19 Grey St.). Registration forms and ticket sales will go live on Tuesday, November 11th. Tickets to the event also include a complimentary Sudbury Transit ride, and can also be purchased at in person at Fromagerie Elgin, Gloria’s Convenience, Jett Landry Music, Walden Home Hardware and at the NLFB office, or on-line at www.sudburysbest.com or www.nlfbsudbury.com.
