Battle Beyond the Barbell 2018
The 6th annual Battle Beyond the Barbell competition in Support of the Janis Foligno Foundation.
Everyone has their own story of someone close to them who has taken on cancer as a foe. From diagnosis, through treatment, and to those nervous years after remission, the battle wages on. But all too often, the battle is lost.
The Janis Foligno Foundation was created in memory of Janis Foligno, cherished daughter, wife, mother, sister, cousin and friend, who passed away after a courageous battle with breast cancer in July 2009.
To date, the Janis Foligno Foundation has supported various charities, including the Sudbury Regional Hospital Foundation’s Breast Cancer Equipment Fund, the Vale Hospice, Meals on Wheels, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), The Independence Centre & Network in Sudbury and the House of Kin – Relief for Cancer families.
Crossfitters love to raise the bar, especially when it’s in support of a good cause.
On June 2, 24 teams from CrossFit gyms across Ontario will gather at Bell Park to compete in the 6th annual Battle Beyond the Barbell cancer fundraiser in support of the Janis Foligno Foundation.
“This promises to be the best year yet,” said Adam Ball, chiropractor and CrossFit Sudbury owner. This year’s event is also co-ordinated with the Organ Donor Celebration Walk.
“We invite the Sudbury community to come out and join us for a fun day at Bell Park. The true strength of the CrossFit Community is most evident when it comes to raising awareness and funds for a good cause,” said Ball.
This event has raised More than $27,000 for the Janis Foligno Foundation in just 5 years. It started off as an in-house competition in 2013, raising $2,000.
Aside from watching athletes compete in the competition, spectators can visit the Vendor Village, featuring Lululemon Vaughan Pop up shop. As an added treat, there will be some local food vendors, including Salute Coffee Company and Cara Tarini’s Rocket Luncher. The event will also feature a raffle of NHL memorabilia.
“CrossFit Sudbury, and their initiative, Battle Beyond the Barbell, understands that a healthy lifestyle is key to combating cancer,” said NHL star Nick Foligno, captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets. “We appreciate what CrossFit Sudbury has done, and continues to do, for not only our foundation, but more importantly, the people of Sudbury. It’s very special to our family that CrossFit Sudbury continues to support the Janis Foligno Foundation.”
All funds raised will go to the Janis Foligno Foundation, which supports various cancer initiatives and charities within the Sudbury community.
